Murai Family
A Fierce Pursuit of Perfection
The Murai Family’s passion shines through nearly 200 years of handcrafting some of the finest saké in Aomori Prefecture under the Momokawa Brewing of Japan name. They inherited their brewing rights from Miura, a historic brewery that helped usher in the modern era of saké in the 1800s, at the close of the Edo (Samurai) period. In the United States, their saké is presented under the Murai Family label, each bottle distinguished by the iconic Nebuta Warrior image from Aomori’s famous summer festival. Like the warrior that adorns their bottles, the Murai Family portfolio is driven by a fierce, multi-generational pursuit of perfection.
Our Story
The name Momokawa Brewing of Japan is drawn from the Oirase River—also known as the Momoishi River—and reflects the brewery’s deep connection to its surroundings. Celebrated for its award-winning saké, consistent quality, and time-honored brewing techniques, the brewery is firmly rooted in the traditions of Aomori Prefecture. In this coastal region, seafood is central to the local economy, culture, and cuisine. Although rice is grown here, cultivation remains challenging due to the cool, humid yamase winds from the Pacific, which can damage crops. Even so, the brewery proudly crafts award-winning saké designed to pair beautifully with the region’s ingredients, honoring the distinctive flavors of its homeland.
