U.S. Sake vs. Japan Sake - Context Is Everything

Fearless Flavor

When the Moonstone flavor infusions were first crafted we were told to not do it. "You don't put fruit flavor in sake, its just not done." But we were exploring new ground and had a bit of a rebellious spirit that drove us to what some call heresy but we simply call tasty. Today you can find an increasing amount of fruit infused sake in Japan but they are called liquor instead of sake and often use futsu, or basic, sake as their base. Moonstone starts with premium Oregon craft sake brewed with pristine water and carefully managed ingredients. No corners cut in flavor.

While some have tried to copy our Moonstone flavors and failed, our lineup has evolved slowly and stood the test of time. Asian Pear is the standout classic flavor with Plum and Raspberry right on its heels. Coconut Lemongrass changes perspectives and is the first flavor infused Nigori that we know of.

Cocktails become quick, easy and exotic when Moonstone is added to the equation. Shaken with added fruit or herbs, carbonated with a soda siphon, mixed with liquors, Moonstone provides a flavorful starting point for delicious cocktails and tinis.

Why not Junmai? Once anything (alcohol, flavor, peanuts, etc.) that is not part of the brewing process is added to a Junmai sake it can not be called Junmai because it is no longer "pure." Even though the sake begins as a Junmai we uphold the standards and do not refer to Moonstone sake as Junmai. Simple but a bit complicated, kind of like great flavor.
